Blogging for dollars

Posted by PRGirlz Alumni on August 21st, 2006

I just spotted this and it made me chortle. At least it’s honest, no? End of the day, isn’t business development the real reason consultants (marketing, PR, the whole shebang) are in the ’sphere in the first place?

    Hi Mary Ellen,
I sure hope that you are wrong about consultants’ motivations Of course, most sweeping generalizations are usually wrong ;-)

Lifelong learning is something that I strive for. And blogging enables me to find the people from whom I can learn. I can meet people who share my interests and share views and learn from theirs.

I realize that you are skeptical of the value of blogging. But I sure hope that you resist the temptation to let that healthy skepticism grow into cynicism.

    Hi, Joe:

One man’s cynicism is another man’s realism, I suppose. In business I think everything’s about money, so I love how he cut right to the chase there. That’s some bloggin’ I can believe in. Don’t be too hard on sweeping generalizations – they’re lots of fun and sometimes true.

In fact, you are both right. I blog for many reasons including shameless self promotion and to extend my personal brand. What should be noteworthy to you Mary Ellen, is that the one post you linked to generated in two days, all the business that I will need until November.

Do you think that makes my blog a good advertising conduit, or does it mean that the blog after blog after blog has given people an understanding of where I have expertise and a trust for who I am?

I think asking cnical questions is healthy. Drawing cynical conclusions before you ask those questions, I have found to be unwise.

    Hi, Shel:

I was asking the question – I certainly feel that’s the reason behind the PR blogging tsunami, I wondered if others agreed. I didn’t get much answer – ‘cuz my blogging fits the bill of a pointless, meandering voice in the wilderness, obviously… (Kidding! Kidding! I know, the conversations, the learning and all that…)

I’m not surprised that one authentic, straight-forward post (i.e. I’m available, hire me) can generate that much business. It was the forthright tone of it that made me take notice. I find lots of the “PR blogging” disingenuous – placeholding, being there for the sake of being there, trying to build a niche or a way to monetize, just in case it goes somewhere. I’ve got a healthy respect for straight-out asking for money or work.

    Cynically yours, Mary Ellen
